This was interesting to read. Like you, I predominantly hike in my own country, which in my case is the UK. I have never used a guide and probably would not have considered using one before reading this. I like my own company on a hike or to choose who I want to share that time with. It certainly makes sense to use a guide if you are backpacking in Nepal, or in any country you are unfamiliar with I suppose. After reading this, I can also see how it would add to your overall experience as they can share their knowledge and experience of an area with you. I will bear your points in mind if I am ever lucky enough to hike in new locations.

In reply to Marie skillicorn. You'll have a great time Marie! You definitely don't need a guide, but I think you'll have a better trip if you do hire one. I recommend my guide Chandra of Friendly Trekkers Adventure. He is based in Pokhara but guides treks all over Nepal.

We will be trekking with the boys in Nepal around October 2018! I am planning to volunteer in a school, via links that we have here in the isle of man. My husband was reluctant to hire a guide but I think I’ve persuaded him! It will take away some of the strain. Reading your blog posts have made me even more excited ?
